It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George Joseph Abbass of Sydney, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, March 30, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Beit Lahyia, Lebanon, he was the son of the late Joseph and Shaffica Abbass, Sydney. George was employed at the CFB radar station, Sydney, until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the St. Joseph"s Lebanese and Syrian Benevolent Society. He will be sadly missed by his family; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; friends, and all who knew him. George is survived by his wife Jean (MacChesney); sons, Greg, Deryck (Marlene), Syndey; daughters, Cheryl (Les), Black Point, N.S., Karen (John), Sydney. He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa (Mark) Mlinac, LaPlata, MD, Carrie Abbass, Marlene Webber, all from Sydney, Thelma Bourque, Ottawa and Sr. Lorraine Abbass, CND, Charlottetown, P.E.I. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Graham; his sister, Edna; daughter-in-law, Cathy; brothers-in-law, Terry Webber and Don Bourque. At his own request, there will be no visitation. Memorial mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph"s Church with Fr. Gerald Dunphy and Father Frank Abbass officiating. A reception to follow in the foyer of St. Joseph Church immediately following the mass. Interment to take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks Donations may be made to charity of one"s choice.
