Longtime Alaskan Emma Jane Pease Burton, 98, died Jan. 7, 2010, in Anchorage.

A funeral will be at noon Saturday, with a viewing from 10:45-11:45 a.m., at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 855 E. 20th Ave. The Rev. Alonzo Patterson will officiate. Interment will be at Fort Richardson.

She was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Elm Mott, Texas, the second eldest of four siblings. Her loving parents were William and Nettie (Brown) Pease. The family relocated to West Station, Texas, where Emma grew up and attended elementary school. She traveled weekdays to Waco, Texas, to attend Moore High School.

She was a member of Bold Spring Baptist Church in West Station and was baptized into the faith in Talis Lake near West Station. Even as a young person, Emma was the leader of the pack, though her brother was the eldest. Emma moved to Waco after high school and joined Toliver Chapel Baptist Church, where she remained for several years, serving faithfully.

She then relocated to Richmond, Calif., as a young woman in 1944 and worked for Kaiser Shipyards for several years. While there, she met Henry Burton, her lifelong love and partner. Henry was an adventurous person and traveled to Fairbanks in 1949. He worked for the Alaska Railroad, and Emma joined Henry shortly thereafter and they relocated to Anchorage in 1950.

They were united in marriage in December 1953. During this time, they were involved in the founding of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Emma studied her Bible daily and always read her Sunday school lesson and the Daily Word every day until her health prevented her from doing so. Emma was also a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Henry (she died on his birthday); her son, James Calvin Wydermyer; brother, Manuel Mack Pease; sister, Creacy Pease Clark; and her surrogate daughter, Shari Stanley.

She leaves to cherish memories of her life one sister, Christine Robinson of Waco; and numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends. She will be especially missed by her nephew Jimmy Clark and longtime caregivers Stephen Reed (one of her favorite nephews) and beloved friend Anna Blanco.
