D. Bruce Adamson, 61 year-old prominent Joplin banker and former Miller resident, died Monday, May 30 in Fort Myers, Florida after apparently suffering a heart attack at his vacation home there.

Graveside services were held at 4pm Thursday, June 2 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City, with the Rev. Dave Patrick officiating. Burial was under direction of Parker Mortuary of Joplin.

Mr. Adamson was chairman of the board of First National Mercantile Bank and Trust Co., of Joplin, and a senior vice president and a director of Mercantile Bancorporation, Inc., a St. Louis bank-holding company. As Southwest Missouri regional administrator for the company, he periodically visited the Mercantile Bank facility here in Miller. The occasion also served as a homecoming in a sense as he usually encountered longtime friends and often times relatives while in the community.

Mr. Adamson was a third-generation member of a family whose name has been prominent in Southwest Missouri banking for nearly three-quarters of a century. His death marks the end of an era.

He was born June 27, 1926, to Don O. and Marjorie Carlock Adamson of Everton, in Dade County, where Don Adamson was associated with his father, John E. Adamson, in operating the Citizens Bank of Everton. The banking facility was founded by the elder Adamson, who also organized banks at Miller and Mt. Vernon early in the century.

Bruce Adamson moved to Miller with his parents in 1928 when Don O., a brother-in-law, M.E. Morris, and Don's father, John E., took over operations of the People Bank of Miller. he was ten years old in 1936 when he moved with his parents to Webb City where his father acquired interest in the Merchants and Miners Bank and became cashier, and eventually president of the institution. The parents are deceased.

Mr. Adamson literally grew up in banking. While attending Webb city public schools he worked as a filing clerk and errand boy at the bank. He graduated from Webb City High School in 1943 and enrolled at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in finance. He received a master's degree in bank administration from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. He also was a graduate of the Rutgers State University's Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II before finishing his studies at Drake. After graduation in 1949, he worked at the Albuquerque (N.M.) National Bank, and was recalled to the Navy during the Korean War.

He was vice president and cashier of Columbia National Bank, Kansas City, from 1953-1963, then vice president of Plaza Bank in Kansas City from 1963-1968, when he moved to Joplin as president and chairman of the board of First National Bank and Trust Co.

Under Adamson's leadership the Joplin institution enjoyed growth expansion through the years to the point that it stood as the lead bank of the First Community Bancorporation of Joplin, with six affiliates when acquired by Mercantile Bancorporation, Inc., of St. Louis, in a 1983 merger. The Peoples Bank of Miller had affiliated with First Community in 1974.

Consolidation of Community Mercantile National Bank in Joplin and Merchants and Miners Mercantile Bank of Webb City with First National Mercantile Bank and Trust Co., of Joplin, occurred after the 1983 merger.

He served in several capacities with the American Banking Association, including on its board of directors in 1982 and 1983, and as chairman of the commercial lending division in 1982-83. He served as a thesis adviser and panelist at Stonier, and was a guest lecturer in local colleges. He was a past treasurer of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and past assistant treasurer of the Kansas City School District.

Other affiliations included Joplin Rotary Club, Joplin Chamber of Commerce, Kelce Center at Pittsburg (Kan.) State University, Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, Joplin, and Garden of the Gods Club, Colorado Springs, Colo. He was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church.

Mr. Adamson is survived by his wife, Frances Adamson, and a son, B. Reid Adamson, Dallas, Texas, and a number of other relatives in the Lawrence-Dade County area and across the state.
