Robert Beer The visitation for Robert Beer, 73, a Chicago native, will be from 8:30 until the time of funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Born June 14, 1935, he died peacefully at home on Thursday, April 23, 2009. Bob attended Luther University in Chicago, graduated from Valparaiso University and received his master's degree in structural engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He was a veteran, a former member of Jaycees, and was active in his church and community. He was a recipient of the Lions International Melvin Jones Award. Over the course of his career, Bob provided structural engineering services to numerous organizations, contributing to the advancement of his profession. These included the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI), to name just a few. Bob was also a continuing education instructor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Bob was a partner in the firm of Wiesinger Holland, Ltd., and became president of the successor firm Beer, Gorski & Graff, Ltd., in Chicago. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Nancy Beer; his son, Robert Jr. (Nicole) Beer; his daughter, Carolyn (Bill) Grow; and six grandchildren, Robert III and Kaitlyn Beer, and William, Adam, Erin and Mark Grow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Elgin. Arrangements were made by Madison Funeral Home, Elgin, 847-741-1128.
