During World War II, Adm. McNulty served active duty in the US Navy and was supervisor of the US Merchant Marine Cadet Corps. He founded the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1945. Before World War II, Admiral McNulty was a maritime superintendent of the Mallory Transport Lines in New York.
Adm. McNulty was professor emeritus at Georgetown University and in 1968 was honored with the title, "Father of the Merchant Marine Academy." He retired in 1959 with the title of Rear Admiral of the US Maritime Service and the US Navy. Among his honors were the Legion of Merit, and the Order of Naval Merit from Cuba.
A native of Gloucester, Adm. McNulty was educated in public schools here. He graduated from the Massachusetts Nautical School, George Washington University and the National University School of Law.
He leaves a brother, Charles J. McNulty; two sisters, Lida A. Crowley and Ethel F. Gove, all of Gloucester, and several nieces and nephews.
Full military honors will accompany funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
