FREDERICKSBURG - Jeff R. Moore, M.D., 81, formerly of Amarillo, died Saturday, July 17, 2010.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of First Baptist Church in Amarillo with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemtery. A memorial service will be held in Fredericksburg at a later date. Arrangements are by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Dr. Moore was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Jackson, Miss., the fourth child of George Hyer and Ruth Caroline Robertson Moore. He graduated from Vanderbilt University, Phi Beta Kappa, and completed medical school there in 1953. He met his wife, Valee Hoffman, in St. Louis, Mo., in 1950, and they were married at Third Baptist Church on May 30, 1953. Shortly afterward, Dr. Moore was deployed to Japan, where he served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. Dr. Moore and his wife moved from Amarillo to Fredericksburg in 2003.

Dr. Moore trained as a plastic surgeon, completing his internship in Minneapolis, his surgical residency at UT Galveston and his plastic surgery residency in Kansas City, Mo.

He came to Amarillo in 1961 as the first plastic surgeon in the northern tri-state area of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. His practice focused primarily on reconstructive surgery, repairing birth defects, and the damages of burns and industrial and motor vehicle accidents. He retired in 1998.

Dr. Moore was always active in his church, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher throughout his career. He also took many mission trips at his own expense, volunteering his surgical skills in Colombia, Honduras, Indonesia, Russia, Mexico and Nigeria, among other countries, many times assisted by his wife, who is a registered nurse.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Valee; three children, Ruthann Moore Hoover and husband Jeryl of Fredericksburg, Jeff R. Moore Jr. and wife Robin of Redlands, Calif., and Christina J. Moore of Austin; five grandsons, Ryan and wife Caitlin, John and Thomas Hoover, and Daniel and Lucas Moore; and a brother, Richard W. Moore of Texarkana.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Hill Country Memorial Hospice, 520 Granite Ave., Fredericksburg, TX 78624-4553.
