Sgt. Matthew W. Weikert, 29, of Jacksonville, Ill., died July 17 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Matt is a 2000 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He is survived by his parents a son, Jayse, two sisters, Meghan Weikert and Melissa Weikert, the mother of his son, Megan Schaecher his girlfriend, Danica Schild, his maternal grandparents, Rev. Wesley and Nell Kiel, his paternal grandparents, Richard A. "Dick" and Virginia Weikert, five aunts and uncles, Cathy Dartman, Kim Weikert-Moner, Steven Kiel (wife, Sheryl)Sheryl Mallehan (husband, Dave) and Scott Kiel (wife, Cathy) and numerous cousins.
