He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Mne Crookes was killed in an explosion while on foot patrol in the Sangin district of Helmand province.
Aged 26, he was born in Birmingham and lived in Halesowen, West Midlands. He joined the Royal Marines Reserve in September 2005 passing for duty as a Royal Marines Commando in November 2006 and was awarded the Commando Dagger for the best all-round recruit in training. He had volunteered for his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. Known as "Crookesy", he was inspiring, likeable, a gentle giant and a great cook. Outside of the military, he was studying for a degree in International Relations and worked as a tree surgeon and labourer. He was also the drummer for a successful heavy metal band.
Mne Crookes leaves behind his mother Sue, brother Robert, sister Jane, fiancée Danielle Davis, other relatives and many friends. His mother said,"Jon was a caring, thoughtful son, full of life. If he made up his mind to do something he always achieved it to a high standard. I am so proud of him. Generous with his time, if he couldn't do something for me, he would always find a friend in the Marines who could."
Funeral with full military honours was held on August 10, 2010 at St John's Church, Halesowen, followed by private burial.
In July 2011 Marine Jonathan Crookes was given the posthumous award of Bachelor of Science in Politics with International Relations by Aston University. The degree certificate was received, on behalf of Jonathan, by his sister, Jane.
