Les was born in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma statehood.
His father worked for the railroad and the family moved frequently. They ended their moving at Weatherford, Custer County, Oklahoma. Les joined the Oklahoma National Guard 8 July 1924 and served until he was inducted into the Federal Service Army Air Corps.he was awarded 7 Bronze Battle Stars; Rome-Arno Invasion, Invasion of Southern France, North Appenines Campaign, Po Valley Campaign, Invasion of North France, Air Combat Balkans, Air Combat Rhineland. He flew 9 combat missions, 82 Hrs, in B24's. He won two bronze stars; air medal; 2 Presidential Unit Citations; American Defense Medal; European Theater Medal with 7 battle stars. He retired from the U. S. Air Force 31 March 1951 with 26 yrs 8 mos 24 days total service time. After retiring from the military, he and the family moved to San Diego, California, where he was employed as Security Officer for General Dynamics Corporation. He had one son, Gary Wayne Avritt. Gary Wayne is buried near his parents, Section A-A Site 1416 with his wife Dollie Marie Avritt.
