Michael L. Dirkes, 100, of La Porte City, Iowa died on Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010 at the La Porte City Nursing & Rehab Center in La Porte City.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Floral Hills Funeral Home with Deacon Jim Patera officiating. Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home Parish Scripture Service: 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Michael Lawrence Dirkes was born on July 12, 1909 at Two Inlets, Minnesota, the son of Michael Lawrence & Anna (Wilhelm) Dirkes. He received his education at Two Inlets. Mike joined the U.S. Army and served during W.W. II. Mike was united in marriage to Dorothy Lillian Cheney on February 12, 1941 at Kirksville, Missouri. Mike lived in La Porte City, Hazleton and Independence for most of his life. He worked at John Deere Co. in Waterloo until retiring in 1974. Mike was a member of the U.A.W. Local #838 and also the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9 where he enjoyed playing cards. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his Son: Lawrence (Lisa) Dirkes of Escondido, California; 3 Daughters: Kathleen (Everett) Bridgeman of Mt. Auburn, Iowa, Patricia (Jesse) Sweeney of Diamond, Missouri & Karen (Marvin) Freeland of Mt. Auburn, Iowa; 8 Grandchildren & 13 Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Dorothy on July 15, 2002, 3 sisters and 5 brothers.
