CPL US ARMY AIR FORCE
WORLD WAR II

His remains were returned from Champigneul-Chalons Sur Marne, France, and interred at Golden Gate National Cemetery on 25 Oct. 1948.

The following was provided by Mike Huggins:

I am an amateur historian for the 119th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion (Mobile) of the US Third Army, ETO, World War II. My uncle William Ward of upstate NY was in Battery A of this battalion along with Corporal George Barnett who was killed in action on 8 Sept. 1944 near Dornot (Metz area), France; for whom you have posted information at the Find A Grave website.

Corporal Barnett of Oakland, CA, was a member of Battery A of the 119th AAA Gun Bn.  On 8 Sept 1944, Battery A did a “motor march to Hill 350 above Dornot (France, vicinity of Metz, west side of Moselle River) to occupy position on Regimental reserve line of the 11th Infantry (Rgt; of the 5th Infantry Div.) to provide AA (anti-aircraft) protection of (infantry) crossing of Moselle (River) between Dornot and Corny.” The position was “untenable.“  “Battery A was forced to withdraw from their first position on Hill 350 due to heavy enemy fire (shelled by German 88s and other artillery of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division). One enlisted man (Cpl Barnett) was killed during the shelling.” (Others were wounded, but survived.)

The photo of Corporal Barnett, with two other Battery A soldiers, was taken while the men were stationed in Pontrypridd, Wales, UK, in April 1944 for training prior to action on the continent. Corporal Barnett is in the center, on the bike.  On the left is Sgt. Mike Souza of San Leandro, CA and on the right is Pfc Rex Carter of San Francisco (Mr. Barnett was identified by former Battery A Pfc Duane Smith – still living, Jan. 2017).
