Eliza J. Pope was born, 23 July 1844, but I do not know where, nor do I know the names of her parents. I suspect she was the first wife of, Carey Pope, but I cannot prove this at this time. She married, James Harrison Ray, in Nebraska, 06 January 1889. To my knowledge she and James Ray shared no children together. I suspect her tombstone reads "mother" because she reared the children from her husband's first wife, Julia [CASSELL] Ray. Elizabeth J. [OPE] Ray died, I presume, in Humboldt, Richardson, NE., 24 September 1936.

In researching Eliza on FamilySearch, with the use of Newspapers.com, I am now certain that she was the daughter of Francis Sims (no FAG) and Electa Rathburn (87326786).

Francis and Electa were married in Washington County, Ohio in 1831. On the 1850 Census in Henry, Marshall, Illinois, they have these children: James, Albert, Priscilla born in Ohio, George born in Illinois, Eliza born in Ohio and John born in Illinois. On the 1860 Census in Washington Township, Wapello, Iowa, they have these children: Albert and Eliza born in Ohio, George, John, Rennie and Emma born in Illinois.

According to FamilySearch, Francis died in Jasper, Iowa in 1864, but there are no records. There is a gravestone for Electa in Jasper, Iowa in 1872.

Eliza married Carey Pope in Jasper, Iowa in 1865.

According to her obituary, they moved to Humboldt, Nebraska, where Carey was killed in a runaway accident in 1884. In 1889, she married James H. Ray, then the sheriff of Richardson County. Her obituary also states that she was born in Washington County, Ohio.

What sealed the deal for me was the mention of her living for 13 years with her sister-in-law Lucy Sims of Peru. I did find them together on the 1930 Census. Lucy Eaglebarger was married to George Washington Sims, the son of Francis Sims and Electa Rathburn.

I hope that all makes sense! You can find Eliza Jane's FamilySearch profile here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/9NT5-8RS
