Virgil, son of Oliver W. and Adaline Johanna (Miller) Carter, died at his home (Carter's Store) in Fortuna, Missouri. On January 1, 1911, he married Rosa May Hunter, daughter of John B. and Sallie A. (McDaniel) Hunter. Rosa was born September 14, 1890.

His wife, Rosa May, died January 30, 1914, shortly after the birth of their daughter. On November 11, 1923, he married Beulah Marie Bridges, daughter of Edna Eliza (Robertson) and James Coleman Bridges.

Following the death of his parents in 1921, Virgil and his sister, Helen, took over Carter's Store in Fortuna, adding a store in Tipton, Missouri, in 1934. His sons took over the Tipton store in 1949 and he continued to operate the Fortuna store until his death. Following Beulah's death, the store was closed, having been in continuous operation for 86 years. Virgil was a member of the Fortuna United Methodist Church and the Fortuna Area Senior Citizens. He had served as a Trustee of the church and was a clerk for the Fortuna Board of Education.
