Greenleaf Smith was born September 25, 1805 in Maine, the son of Benjamin Smith, who was born March 1, 1773, probably in Maine, but possibly in Vermont. Benjamin Smith was married to Susannah Greenleaf, who was born April 25, 1778, also probably in Maine. Eleven children were born to Benjamin Smith and Susannah (Greenleaf) Smith, four dying in infancy. Their home was located near Litchfield, Maine in either Lincoln County or Kennebec County. In 1814, Greenleaf's parents, brought the family west to Ohio. It was there that Greenleaf was married to Lettice Letitia Sparr.

Mary R. White was born c. 1833/34 in Ohio, the daughter of John White and Amelia (__________) White. John White was born c. Oct. 17, 1799/1800 in Phillipston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, the son of Abel and Sarah (Wood) White. John was married to Amelia Metcalf on October __, 1828 in Providence, Rhode Island. John and Amelia were the parents of at least four children, including, Samuel M. White (1829 - 1904), John Augustus White (1831 - 1886), Mary Rosetta White (1834 - 1923) and Sarah White (1839 - 1931).

His name is found in a family marker in the Lafayette Cemetery in Lafayette, Stark County, Illinois. However, this may just be a cenotaph and his remains may still lie somewhere in Pennsylvania. After Benjamin's death, Mary Rosetta (White) Smith was married to Gilbert H. Redfield on December 12, 1867 in Stark County, Illinois. She had two children by Gilbert Redfield, James Arthur Redfield and Mary A. (Redfield) Jones. Mary Rosetta (White) Smith Redfield died in 1923.
