Howard O. Waltz, 50 years old, laborer, is in the city hospital in a critical condition, while police are investigating the circumstances under which he received injuries which may cause his death. Waltz was found this morning at the bottom of a chute in the basement of a garage building at the corner of Queen Anne Avenue and Mercer Street by A.E. Ayers, Plumbing contractor of 109 Jackson St. He was unconscious, but the police have been unable to determine whether his injuries were received in a fall or whether the was slugged and robbed. They were inclined to accept the former theory. Waltz was a janitor in the building when it was operated by the Seattle engineering college, and has since been living in the building as caretaker.
