Thomas Nelson Stephens established a farm in the East Bend neighborhood of Boone County, Kentucky in the area where he'd been raised. He married Mary Ann Riddell of a large local family. She died in 1832, perhaps in childbirth. The couple had no surviving children. He was known as Nelson Stephens.

By the following year he had established himself in Monroe county, Missouri living on the large farm of his father, William Stephens. He married Mary Ann Swindell on Feb. 11, 1834 in Monroe County, Missouri. They had 13 children.

In January, 1854, Tom and his father established a legalpartnership. On January 31, 1865 William Stephens sold his large property to Tom, to include all personal property, all the stock and farm equipment and all the grain and crops. William Stephens held back one grey mare named Dolly. For one year, William was to have use of a dwelling upon the farm which was not the main house. Tom was to keep his father in provisions for one year. The cemetery in which William and Tom are buried lies upon this land. The large home stood until 1988, altho it was uninhabitable at that time.

His daughter Theresa Elena Stephens married Robert Hairston Bassett. The young couple lived on the farm that had been established by Theresa's grandfather William, and further developed by her father Tom. Theresa cared for her father. Tom left the property to Robert Bassett, her husband. They raised a large family there.
