On the afternoon of June 29, 2010, Myra Henretta Smith departed this life to her eternal rewards. She was 98 years old and had lived the last 10 years in northern Ohio.

She was born in New Baltimore, PA, on May 22, 1912, the daughter of Mark and Sarah (Ling) Topper and was the oldest of four children (all deceased).

She married James J. Smith in 1935 and subsequently lived in Michigan, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio before moving to LaPorte in 1954, where she resided for the next 46 years. James, her loving husband of 64 years, died in 2000.

Myra was very active in LaPorte and had a paticular devotion to supporting her faith at St. Peter Catholic Church, where for many years she participated and was president of the Legion of Mary. She was also active at Holy Family Hospital as a volunteer and served with the Lionettes.

Myra is survived by two sons, James Jr. of Aurora, IL, and Michael of Palm City, FL. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Wednesday, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter Catholic Church, LaPorte, on Thursday, July 22, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, LaPorte, next to James.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Peter Catholic Church, 1101 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350.
