Deceased Name: Wilford Merrill Halling CLEARFIELD -- Merrill Halling, age 81, died at home in Clearfield on June 16, 2001 following a prolonged battle with cancer.

He was born March 26, 1920 in Mantua, Utah to Wilford Merrill and Cora Jensen Halling.

He married Bertha Criddle on May 7, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Merrill spent his youth in Mantua and graduated from Box Elder High School. He worked several years in Southern California before serving two years in the Merchant Marines during World War II. After returning, he spent the remainder of his life in Clearfield. He retired from Hill Air Force Base after working 33 years.

Merrill was always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many capacities, including Bishop's counselor, Executive Secretary, Clerk, Priesthood Quorum leadership, Young Men's presidencies, and Stake Missionary. He and his wife served twelve years as Ordinance Workers in the Ogden Temple.

Hobbies included clock-building, gardening, growing apples, and spending time with the family. Merrill's greatest joys in life were his family and serving in the church.

Merrill is survived by his wife and six children: Merilyn (Dale) Johnson, Kaysville; Colleen (Scott) Ostergaard, Kaysville; Marsha (John) Hall, Carson City, Nevada; Delbert (Linda) Halling, Stevensville, Michigan; Dan (Allison) Halling, Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Marvin (Shelly) Halling, North Logan.

There are 34 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Thelma (Keith) Austin, Tremonton; Arlene (Marloe) Archibald, Wellsville; and brother, Darwin (Karen) Halling, Mantua.

Merrill was preceded in death by sisters Bernice Rasmussen, Melba Stoker and Joan Wallentine, and brothers Ray and Clair.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 22, 2001 at 11:00 am at the Clearfield Third Ward meetinghouse, 231 East 300 North, Clearfield. Friends may call on Thursday, June 21, from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary in Roy, 5865 South 1900 West, and Friday at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment, Syracuse Cemetery.
