John Clark Gilmore was born in Mason County, Virginia on July 23, 1795. His parents were Hugh and Lucretia Rdeynolds Gilmore. On September 23, 1819, he married Maria Reynolds in Botetourt County, Virginia. They were married by the Rev. John Morris.
Maria died before 1822. John later married Lucy Franklin Soule, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Polly) Ring. They were married on September 11, 1833, and had several children. John died at Point Pleasant, West Virginia on March 4, 1864. He is buried at the Pioneer Cemetery in Point Pleasant with his second wife.
