Rachel was born 1865 in Springfield, St Clair County, Alabama to Thomas Napoleon Johnson 1821 -1894 and Nancy Garner "Patsy" Head 1828 -1872. Her mother Nancy died when Rachel was 7 years old. Her father married again to Evaline Patterson in 1874 and so she raised helped to raise Rachel.
Rachel married William or James Connell about 1885 in he died about 4 months after their marriage.
Rachel Ann Johnson Connell now a widow married George William S. Thomas, on January 1, 1885 in Calhoun County, Alabama. They had 7 children: Oscar William, Lee Richmond "Bud", Maudie L., Nancy Pearl, Tommy Merrill, Dovie Dee, and Nettie Letha.
His oldest child, Oscar William Thomas told me this story about 1962:
George and Rachel moved to Texas when her brother John J. "Jack" Johnson left Van Zandt Co., Texas and went back to Alabama to help them. Jack arrived in Calhoun Co, Alabama on Christmas Day of 1894. He helped them in selling out and brought them back to Van Zandt Co., Texas with him. They traveled by train which took them two days to get to Wills Point on Jan. 1, 1895. Oscar was about ten years old and remembered the train ride well.
The family lived in Martins Mill and then moved to Ennis, Ellis County between Sept. 1898 when Dovie was born in Martins Mill and Aug. 1899 when Nettie Letha was born.The family moved back to Martins Mill before 1905.
George died January 15, 1905 at their home near Martins Mill, Van Zandt Co, Texas, at the age of 34 from pneumonia. He left Rachel a widow with 7 children to raise. Oscar was the oldest took over as the man of the family helping with his younger siblings. Rachel married K/ J/ Arterberry Sept. 24. 1911 in Van Zandt County and he died and she married J.T. Larimore/Lawrimore who also died leaving her widow again.
Rachel was buried by George.
