From "Physicians of Tift County (GA), Volume 1" compiled by Martha Sue Williams Pittman, published by members of the Women's Auxiliary to The Tift County Medical Society in 1972, and located in the Tifton-Tift County Public library :
Dr. Jesse Havis Picket was born in North Carolina, the son of Jeptha and Jane Havis McKinney Pickett.
He practiced medicine in Webster and Tift County. He served in the Mexican war as a privaate in Co.B Seymour's Battalion of Georgia, was promoted to Corporal in 1847 and mustered out July 10, 1848 in Mobile Alabama at age 19.
He was a captain in Company K, 17th Georgia Regiment of Infantry of the Confederate army and resigned as a major on January 5, 1864.
He married Miss Lavinia M. Harper on January 9, 1851 in Webster County, Georgia and moved to Ty Ty, Tift County, Ga in 1868. He respresented Tift County in the state legislature from 1886-1887. He was the first of four doctors of the Pickett family to practice in and around Ty Ty, Ga. He had three daughters Sara, Lillian, and Cora.

Major Pickett has a CSA pension app on line in the Ga archives virtual vault. He says he was born 12 April 1828. He enlisted and served with Company K of the 17th Ga Regiment. He was shot through the lungs at the 2nd Battle of Manassas. In the application he says he was a Major in his unit.
