Azalee Gray Snow

Azalee Gray Snow, a wonderful wife, mother and friend, died peacefully on November 10, 2010. Azalee was a loving friend to all with a sharp, questioning mind and a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed reading all forms of literature, sewing many of her own cloths, and traveling.

Azalee worked for many years at Travis Heights Elementary School, and in the 1930's and 40's at the Texas Employment Commission where she met her future husband, Ruel Snow. Azalee was a member for 75 years of the First United Methodist Church of Austin where she was a youth teacher, a member of the Administrative Board, and a member of the Susannah Wesley Class.

Azalee Gray was born on May 17, 1915 in Anderson County. She was the oldest of five children of Alice and Lusky Gray. During her youth, Azalee's family lived in the Antrim area, in Conroe and in Cold Springs where she graduated as valedictorian in 1932. She worked in various jobs in towns around Houston until she moved to Austin in 1936 to work for the Texas Employment Commission and in the hope of attending the University of Texas. That hope was never fulfilled as Azalee spent several years assisting her parents in the purchase of their home and aiding in her sisters' schooling.

Azalee married Captain Ruel Snow in 1945 in Virginia. They returned to Austin after the war where they built their home and raised two sons, David and Donald. For many years Azalee was active in the local school Parent Teacher Associations and as a Cub Scouts den mother. In the 1960's Azalee began working as the secretary at Travis Heights Elementary School where she worked until the mid-1970's. In retirement Azalee and Ruel enjoyed visiting relatives across the US, viewing University of Texas sports, square dancing and being grandparents to several step grand children.

Ruel died in 1993 but Azalee kept active with reading and with playing canasta with her fellow Travis Heights retirees. In recent years Azalee has been a member of the Emeritus Beckett Meadows retirement community.

There will be a memorial service for Azalee's family and friends on Monday, November 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca, Austin. All of her friends and family are invited to this celebration of Azalee's life. A reception will follow at the church's Family Life Center. Azalee is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David Snow and Rosemary Elliott-Snow; sister and brother-in-law Maxine and Bill Jones; and many nephews, nieces and step grand children.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca, Austin, Texas 78701; or to The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Avenue, Austin, Texas 78739. Obituary and guestbook available online at
