DAILY REVIEW 10/22/1912 (provided by Janet Donner)

James Hockaday a wealthy retired farmer died at 5:30 Monday afternoon at the family residence, 905 E. Cantrell Street. He was almost seventy-six years old. His death was caused by Brights Disease. He had been in failing health for several years and his death had been daily expected for over a week. He was an old resident of the county having been here since 1856.

He was born in Virginia November 28, 1836, the family moving to Ohio while he was a baby and in 1856 they moved to Macon County and settled about a half mile south of Emery. He and Miss Martha Anna Walker were married on February 5, 1863. They came at once to Decatur and have lived ever since in the home on E. Cantrell Street.

Mr. Hockaday is survived by his wife, and the following children, B. B. Hockaday of Emery, Mrs. Ida Huddleston of Decatur, Mrs. Anna Wikoff, Mrs. L. Littleton and James L. Hockaday of Maroa, Mrs. Grace Weaver and Guy Hockaday of Decatur. He also leaves two brothers B.H. Hockaday and J.R. Hockaday, both of Emery.

He was prominently connected with the I.O.O.F. lodge at Forsyth, being one of the charter members.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon at the family residence and will be in charge of Forsyth I. O. O. F. lodge. The body will be placed in the mausoleum in Greenwood.

1) James, his wife Martha, and an infant son who died on March 29, 1887, were placed in the Greenwood Cemetery mausoleum. The mausoleum was later torn down and their remains buried next to their son Guy in Fairlawn Cemetery.

2) James was born in Ohio as Quaker records show they transfered church membership from Virginia to the Short Creek Monthly Meeting in Ohio in 1827.

James was born on November 28, 1836 to Quakers Benjamin Bates Hockaday and Sarah Ladd. He was the fifth and last child born to Sarah, as she died in 1842. In 1844, James was age seven when his father wed a second time. James' father was a merchant in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio. James was age nineteen when, in 1856, the family moved to Macon County, Illinois. James wed Martha Ann Walker in Macon County, Illinois on February 5, 1863. They lived near Forsythe and had:
