Obituary, The Columbia Daily Tribune, July 8, 2010:

Florence Moss, 89, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Moberly Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, July 12, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Florence was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Streator, Ill., to Ralph and Margaret Schroeder Johnston, and they preceded her in death. She married Vernon Moss on Dec. 9, 1945, in Moline, Ill. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1997,

She was a 1938 graduate of Moline High School and a more than-50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi in Moline. She worked as an aid for Moline schools and a stenographer for Strombeck-Becker Manufacturing, and in 1939 she began working for Deere-Mansur. In 1945 she moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, and worked as a secretary at Ketchikan Business Services. She moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked at the high school in 1946. In 1959 she worked as a secretary for the Soil Conservation Service in Washington, D.C. She passed the exam to become a certified professional secretary in 1961 and retired shortly after to raise her family. Florence moved to Columbia in 1963 and served for many years as a volunteer at University Hospital.

Florence was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, and she collected dolls and teddy bears. She enjoyed bird-watching, traveling, square dancing and making stained glass.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Thompson and husband Rick; son Larry Moss and wife Margie; grandchildren Nichole Turner, Jessica Turner, Patrick Moss, Rebecca Jewell, Chad Thompson and Lacie Thompson; and great-grandchildren Alyssa Smith, Michael Turner, Hope Sapp, Zachary Schaeffer, Dalton Perkins and Aris Thompson-Ilsley.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Moss; and an infant brother.
