Charles A. Balczewski, age 75, of Exeland, died on Wednesday, June 20 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Charles Andrew Balczewski was born on April 9, 1926 in Radisson, the son of John and Anna (Roach) Balczewski. He graduated from high school in Bruce. He joined the service on June 20, 1944 and served during World War II. He was honored with the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, three overseas service bars, and the Good Conduct medal. After he was honorably discharged on Aug. 21, 1946 he worked for three years with Acme Steel in Chicago.

He moved back to Exeland in 1950 and then worked three years with SOO Line Railroad. On July 7, 1951 he was joined in marriage to Bette Severson in Winter. Together they owned and operated Charlie and Bette’s Bar in Exeland for 17 years. In 1970 he built a softball diamond and the Bullpen bar that he operated for 13 years. During that same time he ran Radisson Redimix and A1 Plumbing.

He was president of Sawyer County Tavern League for several years and then worked for Sawyer County Housing Authority and Impact Seven as a building inspector. He also served on the County Board of Supervisors, and served 16 years as a town chairman for the town of Weirgor. He was currently on the Sawyer County Board of Appeals. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife Bette; son, Robert (Carol) Balczewski, Radisson; daughter, Trudi (Kelly) Scoles, Bruce; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Radisson with Father Vincent Bromley officiating. Music was provided by Jean Eck, Nancy Gerber, and Mary Ann Kernan. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward, and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Military rites were accorded by the Exeland American Legion Post #425. Interment was in the Windfall Cemetery in Exeland.

Casket bearers were Allen Gerber, Ronald Lenk, Robert Stankowski, Russell Thompson, John Villiard and Robert Vitcenda.

The Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
