H. E. Scott, Sr., prominent educator and president of Burritt College, at Spencer, Tennessee, for more than two decades, died Sunday, September 17, at McMinnville. Brother Scott, 76, was a leading educator In Tennessee for more than half a century. He was born In the Irving College community of Warren County and devoted virtually all of his life to the field of education. He attended the Warren County public schools, Irving College and Burritt College, and received his B.S. and M.A. degrees at the University of Tennessee In Knoxville. Upon graduation, he joined the faculty of Burritt College and his period of service spanned almost four decades. He became president In 1918 and remained In that position until 1939. He served twelve years as Superintendent of Van Buren County Schools, and one term as Superintendent of Warren County Schools. He served two terms as a member of the State Textbook Commission In Tennessee. His. wife, Miss Notte Lewis preceded him In death In 1944. He is survived by a son, Henry E. Scott,  Jr. of Nashville, and a daughter, Mrs. Robert E. Gray, of Kinston, North Carolina. Professor Scott was a blessing to the communities where he lived. He loved the church and was a splendid Bible teacher. I was In his classes for four years at Burritt. was honored that he called me one of his boys," and that he asked me to speak at his funeral service. Educator Dies
Death came early Sunday morning September 17, 1967, to H.E. Scott, president of Burritt College at Spencer for more than 20 years and a prominent educator for more than half a century. Prof. Scott, 76, died at Warren Co. General Hospital at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, where he had been a patient for the past several months. He was a resident of West Main., McMinnville. Funeral services were held Monday, September 18, 1967, at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of High's Inc. with George W. Dehoff officiating. Interment was in Mt. View Cemetery. A native of Warren County, Mr. Scott was born December 18, 1980, in the Irving College community. His parents were Levi and Nannie Lockhart Scott and his father served as Tax Assessor of Warren Co. for more than a quarter of a century. Prof. Scott devoted virtually all of his life to education. He attended the public schools of Irving College and entered Burritt College at Spencer in 1909, remaining there until graduation. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Tenn. in Knoxville, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Farternity (sic). Maintaining a reputation as a scholar, Prof. Scott at the close of his career at Burritt College as a student was asked to remain and join the school's faculty. He accepted and thus began his long tenure with the Church of Christ-supported institution. He became president in 1918 and remained in the position until the institution closed in 1939.
