Julia Ann Williams was the daughter of Robert Williams and Frances Harris. She married Andrew Varner on 4 May, 1865, after he had returned from fighting in the Civil War.

Julia and Andrew brought up three sons in a small farmhouse on present-day Kennedy Farm Road in Randolph County, North Carolina. Her grandson recalled that the house had no electricity, and that Grandma Varner cooked over a fireplace and an old wood stove. The Varner sons were John Albert, James Milton, who became a minister, and Sam, a schoolteacher.

Grandma Varner died of a stroke at age 78.
