Jewell Scott 50, Last Rites Held August 12
Funeral services for Mrs. Chester (Jewell) Scott, 50, of Bedford, held August 12 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Ollie Odle. Mrs. Scott died August 10, 1973, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Lexington Cemetery, northeast of Bedford.
Jewell Beatrice Abernathy, daughter of Ernest and Ethel Abernathy, was born at Murphy, Oklahoma, October 11, 1922. She was married on January 18, 1948 to Chester Scott. Shortly after their marriage they lived on a farm and adopted a son, Michael Scott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester, and her parents.
At one time Jewell and her husband owned and operated the Junction Cafe and Service Station. After her husband's death in 1963 she served as a waitress in several restaurants in the Bedford community. During the past ten years she has been both mother and father to her son.
She is survived by her son, Michael, of the home; her step-mother, Addie Abernathy, Stevensville, Texas; one sister, Merle Clarkson, Fontana, Calif.; one brother, Gordon Abernathy, Blockton, Iowa; several nieces; nephews and many friends.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Bedford.
Jewell will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
