Charles served as a Private, Company A, 2nd Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 2nd Delaware on May 21, 1861 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 24 years old, 6' - 1/2" tall, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, a rope maker by trade, and residing in Wilmington, Delaware.

Charles was first declared "Missing In Action" the day after the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia and when his remains were found he was declared "Killed In Action" in this battle.
