Civil War Union Soldier. He served as a Private in Company F, 7th Michigan Volunteer Infantry from his enlistment on August 22, 1861 at age 17 (he lied about his age and swore an oath saying he was over 18) until his death at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863. He was born in Ontario, Canada but came down to Michigan to fight in Mr. Lincoln's War. Was it for the adventure or for the cause we will never know, In a cemetery at Gettysburg there is a small plot that is Forever Canada.

If you are ever in Gettysburg and have time to visit the National Cemetery, pay a short visit to this Canadian who gave up all his tomorrows for others’ todays, because after reading this you are no longer strangers.

The attached photo of William is courtesy of the late Dick Watts Collection of Surrey, British Columbia,Canada who was writing the book “Canadians at Gettysburg”. I wish to thank his Estate for using his work for Find a Grave. He is also the great uncle of young Bruce Almas 1908-1922 of Cloverdale, British Columbia who is also listed here on Find A Grave.
