Stan was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean conflict. He enlisted in the service on Apr 16, 1946 in Louisville, KY. His career was fire fighting. He worked for the Danville, Kentucky Fire Department, served as Fire Chief of the Harrodsburg, Kentucky Fire Department, served as a Boyle County Kentucky Fire Commissioner, and worked for the Kentucky State Fire Marshall's Office. He was elected president of the Kentucky Fireman's Association in the 1960's. He also served as a statewide instructor for firefighter training.

He married Hilma Stroud on August 12, 1945, in Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky. They had one daughter, Rebecca Lynn Boyd.
