Son of James Thom of Londonderry, NH and Harriet Coffin of Gloucester, MA [Derry VR]. Grandson of Dr. Isaac Thom and Persis Sergeant.

He was Chief of Topographical Engineers for General Halleck and created the Official or Thom map for the Battle of Shiloh.

General Thom held commissions in all the military grades up to include that of Colonel of Engineers U.S. Army with the Brevet Rank of Brigadier General. He served his country for 44 consecutive years.

He donated a stained glass window to the First Parish Church in East Derry, NH which can be seen on his brother James Thom's memorial page.

Note: In June 2010 the Derry Heritage Commission had a plaque installed honoring General Thom's donation of the main cemetery fence and gate.
