Nellie was the daughter of Sidney Wilson Whapels & Lucy Rachel EDENS. She married Carl Martin. They had 13 children.

She was a member of Charleston Mountain Mission and a lifelong resident of Kanawha County.

Surviving sons, Benny Jo and Robert Lee, both of Charleston; daughters, Emma Jean Martin Hill of Malden, Ruby Ann Martin King of Las Vegas; brothers, Arthur Whaples of Nitro, Sidney Whaples of Teays Valley, Harry Whaples of Ohio, Ross Whaples of Fayetteville, Homer Whaples of Charleston, Emory of North Carolina; sister, Elizabeth Witt of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
