Hays was Business Manager and Purchasing Agent for the City of Coalinga for many years and was active in civic affairs. He later moved to Huron where he owned and operated his own hardware store and lumber yard until he retired and moved to Soquel. Although a very busy man, Hays took time out "to smell the roses". He was very active in athletics and was a great competitor. He played on the Coalinga Oilers baseball team and the Elks basketball team. He excelled in golf, winning many tournaments.
They had one son. David Mitchell was born July 5, 1940, in Coalinga. He married Jane L. on January 28, 1968. They had two children: Michael and Kari.
