ELIZABETH COKER

Elizabeth Chipman

Coker

Age 87, was born in Wilmington, DE, where she graduated from Wilmington High School. She was also a graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, PA. In 1945 she graduated from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, where she received a BA degree in sociology and psychology. During the summers while attending Skidmore she volunteered as a case worker for the Delaware State Hospital. After graduating from college, she was employed for 16 years as one of the assistant librarians at the DuPont Experimental Station Lavosier Library.

Betty was a 74-year member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served on the Board of Trustees and was a member of United Methodist Women. She more recently belonges to and attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of long standing of AAUW. She also was a member of the Delaware Art Museum, the DAM Council, Winterthur Museum, the Brandywine River Museum, the Historical Society of Delaware, the Seaford Historical Society, Hagley Museum, the DuPont Country Club (for over 50 years), the Textile Museum and the International Hajji Baba Rug Society (both of Washington, DC), New Castle County Libraries, and the former Delaware Symphony League.

Betty was very active in volunteer work. She was a emeritus member of the Junior Board of the Christiana Care, Inc, where she served actively in a number of services for forty-one years, first at the Wilmington General Hospital and later at the Christiana Hospital. She was also a volunteer on the Art Committee of Christiana Care. She was a volunteer for the Winterthur Guild. In the 1960's she participated in Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the Wilmington Music School. More recently she attended the Academy of Lifelong Learning. She loved to travel and made numerous trips to Europe and to New England and the western United States and Canada.

Betty's major interest was working with people, first at the Delaware State Hospital, next at the Lavosier Library at the DuPont Experimental Station and finally at Christiana Care. In all of these activities she was deeply committed to helping people solve their problems to the extent that she could. Betty was always interested in Delaware history, especially that which pertained to the duPont family, and she collected a surprising number of books on this subject. She was especially proud of her many years of service on the Jiunior Board. While on the Board, working with her dear friend, Pat Beck, they compiled the history of Christiana Care, and of the Junior Board, both of which were included in a cook book published by that organization. In addition she researched the marble della Robbia sculptor by J.H. Bass, formerly located at the Wilmington General Hospital over the entrance of the old Maternity Building and now located in front of the Maternity Building at Christiana Hospital.

Betty began to study and collect antiques in the early 1960's when she and her husband began to vacation every year in New England. She developed a general interest in ceramics and porcelain, but found Chinese export porcelain particularly fascinating to study and collect. She also became interested in textiles, both American and oriental. In whatever she collected, she had an almost unerring 'eye' for quality and authenticity.

Betty is survived by her husband James Coker after 47 years of marriage, her nephew, Bruce Lewis Chipman, her niece, Martha Chipman Vahey, and a brother- and sister-in-law, Louise and Denward Davis of Birmingham, AL.

Burial will be private at the Lower Brandywine Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Elizabeth Chipman and James Newton Coker Foundation o/c Wachovia Securities, 3801 Kennett Pike, PO Box 5740, Greenville DE 19807. The Foundation is in honor of Dr. I. Lewis Chipman Sr., a pioneer in the study and treatment of infectious diseases, and funds research scholarships dealing with infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania.
