John Wayne Ferguson Sr., 73, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 9 at the Pittman Road Church of God, 4700 Pittman Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64133.

The family will receive friends starting at 5 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the building fund at Woods Chapel Church of God in Lee's Summit, 1150 NE Wood's Chapel Road, Lee's Summit, Missouri 64064 or Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64145.

John was born on November 4, 1936, in Ash Grove, Missouri, to John W. and Eula M. (Rogers) Ferguson. In 1952, John began his library career as a book shelver at the Springfield, Missouri Public Library. He married Nancy Carolyn Southerland in 1958. A month later, he graduated from Southwest Missouri State College with a B.S. Degree and entered the service in 1959 as an officer in the U.S. Army, Artillery Branch. In 1961, John received a scholarship from the Missouri State Library and attended the University of Oklahoma Graduate School of Library Science. Upon receiving his Masters Degree in Library Science, John accepted the position of Assistant Librarian of the Jackson County Public Library in 1964. The Mid-Continent Public Library was established in 1965 and John became the Assistant Director of Libraries. In January of 1981, John was appointed Director of Libraries for the Mid-Continent Public Library. He received national recognition when he was named Librarian of the Year for 1992 by the Library Journal. Some of the numerous community and professional activities in which John provided leadership were: President of the Public Libraries Division of the Missouri Library Assoc., President of the KC Metropolitan Library Network, President of the Independence Rotary Club, President of the Independence YMCA Board of Directors, President of the Library Advisory Committee to the Coordinating Board for Higher Education, President of the Jackson County Free Medical Board, Board of Directors for S.E. Enterprises, District Governor of Rotary International, Member of the Council of Legislation for Rotary International in Singapore, Net Control of the Rotarians of Amateur Radio (ROAR), Member of the Independence Regional Health Center Board of Directors, Member of the Child Abuse Prevention Assoc. Board, Co-Founder of Upward Bound Senior Ministry in 1999, Ordained at Church of God in Anderson, Indiana in April 2005. He loved God and serving Him was his greatest joy. John was a member of The Woods Chapel Church of God in Lee's Summit, and a member of the Senior Adult Task Force of the National Church of God. He was also a recipient of the Independence Plan for Neighborhood Council's Lifetime Achievement Award and The Rotary Foundation Meritorious Service Award.

John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Carolyn Ferguson of the home; sons: John Ferguson Jr. & wife Teri of Colorado Springs, CO, Mark Ferguson & wife Donna of Castle Rock, CO, & Steven Ferguson of Independence, MO; grandchildren: Virginia Ferguson, Matthew Ferguson, John Ferguson III, Vanessa Ferguson, & Alexandria Ferguson; great-grandchildren: Lucas Ferguson, Alexis Ferguson, & Barrett Ferguson Paas; and sister: Gail Mitchell.
