Edwin Frederick "Fred" Bolgert, age 88, of Kohler, died Thursday evening, July 1, 2010 at St. Nicholas Hospital.
Fred was born September 1, 1921 in Sheboygan to Samuel and Amalia (Engel) Bolgert, German Russian immigrants.
He was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1939 and the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Class of 1949 with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
During WW II, Fred honorably served his country in the US Army/Air Force as a fighter pilot in the 78th Fighter Group. He flew P47s and was discharged from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel.
For many years, he was employed as a mechanical engineer in the plumbing division of the Kohler Co. until his retirement. He was a member of the Kohler Co. Quarter Century Club and the Civil Air Patrol.
Fred was a faithful, lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was a past member of the Adult Choir and also translated many of the church's German documents, as well as many documents for the Volga German Society.
He loved both vegetable and flower gardening, German food, dogs, and was a car enthusiast. He could play the piano by ear and loved doing so for his family at Christmas. He was a gun collector and was on the Board of Directors of the Sheboygan Gun Club where he participated in gun sighting and actively training others. He also was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by nephew, Paul (Barbara) Bolgert of Sheboygan; nieces, Karen Bolgert of Sheboygan and Sandy Serge of Acworth, GA; grandnephew, Timothy Bolgert; and grandnieces, Amalia (Brandon) Magee, Emily Bolgert, and Lindsay Bolgert, all of Sheboygan; and best friend/neighbor/helper, Scott Ehlert of Kohler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, David Bolgert and Walter P. Bolgert.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Ballhorn Chapels. Reverend John M. Berg, Associate Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lutheran Cemetery.
Fred will always be remembered as a soft spoken gentleman and a great neighbor.
