Weldon E. Wittwer, 48, of Fort Wayne, a native of Berne, died at 10:45 pm Tuesday at the Kiwanis Building in Fort Wayne where he had resided in an apartment. He had lived in Fort Wayne a few years, was employed as a brick mason and had been in ill health for some time but death was unexpected. Mr. Wittwer was born in Berne March 12, 1919, a son of Samuel and Mary Zimmerman Wittwer. He was married to Lola Freeburn, who preceded him in death.
He was a member of the First Missionary Church in Berne.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce, who is with the United States Navy at Bainbridge, Maryland and Jerry, Flint, Michigan; two grandchildren; a brother, Vilas, of Richmond and six sisters, Mrs. Felix (Pearl) Yoss, Fort Wayne; Mrs. Lester (Lena) Reynolds, Linn Grove; Mrs. Frank (Gladys) Liechty, Berne; Mrs. Elvet (Mabel) Dawe, North Ridge, California; Mrs. Robert (Helen) Welch, Monroe and Mrs. Jay (Phyllis) Martin, Decatur R.R.
Several brothers and the parents preceded in death. Deceased brothers are Kenneth, Laverne, Jesse and John.
Wittwer was a veteran of World War II and was a prisoner of war in a German prison camp for 18 months.
The body is at the Winteregg-Linn Funeral Home in Decatur where friends may call after 2 pm Thursday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 pm Friday. Rev. C. H. Wiederkehr of Berne officiating. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery west of Berne.
