Thomas served as a Private with the 3rd Delaware Infantry, Company A during the Civil War.

The 3rd Delaware Infantry was part of the 4th Division, 2nd Brigade under Brigadier General Lysander Cutler.

Thomas was "Killed In Action" in the Battle of Cold Harbor during the war.

He was possibly related to Lt. Col William B. Dorrell, Commander of the 3rd Delaware Infantry, who was also "Killed In Action" at Petersburg, Virginia 15 days later.

The 3rd Delaware Infantry lost a total of 135 men during the war; 7 officers and 46 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 80 enlisted men died of disease.
