Lucille Hayes Elmore, 88, formerly of Huntington, died February 27, 2003, at the Carriage Club retirement community in Charlotte, N.C. A funeral service was held at 2:30 P.M. by the Rev. David Erenrich Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Kringle Carpenter Mortuary. Interment will follow in Woodmere Cemetery. She was born in Weston, West Virginia, and lived in Huntington with her family for over 60 years, most recently until 1993, when she relocated to Charlotte, N.C. Close to her son, Ron and his family. Along with her husband of 34 years, Harry Elmore, Jr. ( deceased Nov. 8, 1977), she was very active in the Huntington area for decades. She was employed by the Milady Shop, in downtown Huntington, for 24 years; she was very active at First United Methodist Church where she served in the choir and shepherding ministries; she contributed greatly in the Vinson High School PTA and Band Boosters from 1959 to 1963. She was also an active member of the Huntington Women’s Club and Glenbrier’s Bridge Club. Lucille’s family, the Hayes, consisted of 10 brothers and sisters, all active in the music field, both amateur and professional. Lucille’s father, Homer, was an accomplished trumpet player and band leader, and was the leader of the Hayes Family Band that included her mother, Bessie. This group entertained across the country in the 1930’s. Lucille also was a part of a ladies quartet that sang in the Huntington area in the 60s and 70’s. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Virginia Hayes Smith of Huntington; her son, Ron (B.J.) Elmore of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Kim Elmore-Wilcox and Jordan Elmore and her great-granddaughter, Brittany Elmore, all of Charlotte; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Sara Elmore of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Don and Betty Elmore, Catherine Hayes of White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia; and many nephews, including Darrell Smith and family of Huntington; Debra Jones of Winfield, West Virginia; Rocky Smith of Columbus, Ohio.
