Killed at the hands of her husband. Though Mary is called "Polly" in newspaper article, she is called both Polly and Mary on death certificates. 1900 census shows "Mary".
She married Henry Scutcheon 30 Oct 1889. They were both from England, Henry being age 30, Mary age 24.
From Kevin:
Mae Taylor (daughter of Mary (Polly) Vowles, the woman who married Henry Scutcheon in 1889, was involved in a court case with her mother in November 1906. Now, Mae talked something about this in the days after the ax murders of her mom, step-brother and George Anning (and suicide of her step-dad, Henry.) She arrived from Grand Rapids in Grand Haven to claim the bodies for burial. The Grand Haven Tribune reported Mae had encouraged her mother to leave Henry as she feared he would kill her. What is strange, is the listed entry of the cases to be held before the Ottawa County judge for November 1906 was "Polly Scutcheon v. May Taylor"... and the case is listed as a "divorce." Now, Polly and Mae were not getting a divorce, as they were mother and daughter... but I think this might be about Mae bringing a case for divorce for her mother based on grounds she feared Henry Scutcheon would kill her mother. I am still researching this. Anyone, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I am also in touch with ancestors of the Timmermans (Lester was neighbor who came to the scene of the ax murders, and Henry once threatened to shoot him off a silo he was working on... and Lester's brother owned the home...a rental...which the Scutcheons lived in.)
