Lena Sachs Marcus came to the United States from Russia in 1907, when she was 15, and worked to save money for her family to follow. She was able to bring her three brothers here, but her mother was turned away at Ellis Island, due to an eye problem. She was sent back to Russia and Lena never saw her again. Lena took in sewing and was involved in workers' rights, as well as the Women's Suffragette movement.
