Private John W. Haines served with Co.F 7th California Vol. Inf. During The Civil War of 1861-65. He had Gone to California in 1858 to help an uncle run a farm near San Francisco and was living there when the Civil War broke out. In 1863 he enlisted in the 7th Cal. Vol. Inf. and spent most of his military time chasing Indains all the way to Nevada. After the war he tried to settle down to be a farmer but it was not to be as he took up being a train engineer and was soon back to Nevada were he took work as a Stationery Engineer with the many Nevada mines. He died on November 17, 1903, at Age 63 of Dropsy. He was buried with full military honors at the Grand Army of the Republic Gen. Custer Post No. 5 in the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City, Nevada.
