He was married to 2 sisters: The first wife was Mary Catherine 'Caty' Hanson - she married John in Carter Co., TN on 10 Feb 1802. Sadly she passed away in 1808, leaving 3 children behind.

After she died John later married her sister Elizabeth Hanson. They had 11 children together (not including the first 3).
