Mrs. Murrell passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 3:00 A.M. in a New Iberia care facility.

A native of Houma, Mrs. Murrell was a 1936 graduate and class salutatorian of Terrebonne High School, also receiving the American Legion Award. Her essay on Louisiana Sugar Cane Production was judged the best essay at the 1936 Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival in Plaquemine. This encouraged her to pursue language arts as a vocation. She entered SLI (now UL Lafayette) at age 16, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1940.

Mrs. Murrell's talents were many, and throughout the years she shared them in various jobs. While at SLI, she worked for a professor, Dr. Tinsley. She also worked as a clerical secretary at Houma Naval Station, where she also taught shorthand to enlisted men. Other jobs included clerical secretary at Southeast Louisiana College in Hammond, and in the Office of the President at Greensboro Women's College in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Murrell was an educator, and she taught children and young adults at Montegue, St. Amant, and in Iberia Parish, where she retired as supervisor of the gifted program. Mrs. Murrell continued her own education throughout her career, and had received certifications in special education, supervisory administration, gifted curriculum, and reading disabilities, among others.

A longtime member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Mrs. Murrell shared and demonstrated her faith through her service as a Eucharistic minister.

Mrs. Murrell enjoyed gardening, and could often be found planting flowers and bulbs in her yard. She also enjoyed traveling and arranging tours. Her greatest joy in life, however, was being with and caring for her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Joan Murrell Musemeche of New Iberia and Kim Murrell Shaw and husband, Doug of Breaux Bridge; son, Joshua "Bubba" Murrell of New Iberia; grandchildren, Lori Lyman and husband, Ron of New Iberia, Vic Musemeche, Jr. and wife, Katrina of New Iberia, Thomas Musemeche of New Iberia, Douglas "D.J." Shaw and wife, Kathline of Lafayette, and Elizabeth Shaw of Breaux Bridge; great-grandchildren, Tagan Prados of New Iberia, Kekoa Lyman of New Iberia, Milo Musemeche of New Iberia, Kallan McKutchen of Lafayette, Connor Shaw of Lafayette, and Aiden Shaw of Lafayette; brother, Carl Babin and wife, Kathleen of Nashville, TN; sister, Maureen Smith and husband, Don of Springfield, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Preceding Mrs. Murrell in death was her husband, Joffre Murrell; parents, Louis Joseph and Mary Labit Babin; and a daughter, Catherine Lucy Murrell.

Serving as pallbearers are Joshua "Bubba" Murrell, Doug Shaw, Douglas "D.J." Shaw, Donny Smith, Victor Musemeche, Sr., Vic Musemeche, Jr., and Thomas Musemeche.
