James served as a First Sergeant with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company K during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware Infantry on September 12, 1861 in Wilmington, Delaware for a 3 year term. He was noted as being 18 years old, born in Pennsylvania, 5' - 7" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and employed as a machinist.

He re-enlisted in the 1st Delaware on December 19, 1863 for another 3 year term.

James was "Killed In Action" in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House during the war.
