Samuel served as a Private with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company B during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware Infantry on September 16, 1861 in Wilmington, Delaware for a 3 year term. He was noted as being 18 years old, born in New York City, New York, 5' - 7" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and employed as a cooper.

He re-enlisted in the 1st Delaware on December 18, 1863 in Stevensburg, Virginia for a second 3 year term.

Samuel "Died Of Wounds" received in the Battle of the Wilderness during the war.
