In the Carthage Press, of March 10, 1910 an incident was reported about a serious accident to-wit:
RUTH LANG BADLY BURNED
YOUNG GIRL'S CLOTHING CATCHES FIRE WHILE SHE IS DRESSING
Is Saved From Serious Injury by Mrs. Fred C. O'Meara, at Whose Home the Accident Occurred
With her clothing in flames from contact with an open gas fire, Ruth Lang, 11-year-old daughter of Cashier J. E. Lang of the Central National bank ran through the hallway and rooms of the home of Rev. Fred C. O'Meara on Howard avenue this morning screaming with fright until caught by Mrs. O'Meara, who extinguished the flames with an aid of a rug and some heavy clothing. The girl was painfully, but not seriously, burned and Mrs. O'Meara also suffered from the flames. It was a narrow escape from far more serious injury for both the woman and child.
Ruth Lang had gone to the O'Meara home last evening to spend the night with the family, as it was to have been the O'Meara last night in Carthage before moving to Joplin.
While dressing this morning, she stepped near an open gas store which was burning in the room, and her clothing caught fire. Instantly she began to cry for help and ran into the hall and through different rooms of the house. Mrs. O'Meara running to the girl's aid caught her and smothered the flames. Mrs. O'Meara's hands and arms were painfully burned and her dress ignited, but this fire was extinguished before it burned her body.
Burns are not Deep
The young girl's burns cover much of her body, but it is thought that they are not deep. She was taken to her home, where she is receiving every care. It will probably be several weeks before she will fully recover. Her face and hands were untouched by the fire and will bear no scars. As a result of Mrs. O'Meara's injuries the removal of the O'Meara's to Joplin will be postponed until the end of the week.
