Fred H. Adkisson, 75, a lifelong resident of Hillsboro township, who had lived at 821 South Oak street in Hillsboro for the past 45 years, died two hours after a heart seizure Friday evening. He was stricken at his home and was taken to Hillsboro hospital where his death occurred at 7:15 p.m.
He had been a city employee for the past twelve years and was employed at the water department filtration plant as an operator. He was scheduled to work the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift Friday night.
Born April 10, 1887 on a farm southwest of Hillsboro, Fred Homer Adkisson was a son of George W. and Amanda Catherine (McLain) Adkisson and he was reared in the community of his birth. He and Lula May, a daughter of Wilson and Naoma (Tannehill) May were united in marriage at St. Charles, Mo., on June 17, 1909 by Justice of the Peace J. J. Frey. The first three years of their married life was spent on the Adkisson farm and then they moved to Hillsboro, where they had since had their home.
Among the jobs Mr. Adkisson had filled during his more than 50 active years included serving as a conductor on the old city street car lines; a member of the staff at McDavid Car Co. and he was employed by the state highway department prior to joining the city water department staff. In recent months he had considered retirement but he enjoyed working and his health permitted him to be active and to work his usual shift, so that he never fulfilled his intentions.
Mr. and Mrs. Adkisson became parents of three children, Leonard Adkisson of Bethalto, a long time employee of Standard Oil Co. at Wood River; Grace, wife of Elbert Lee Weathers of Lake Villa, north of Chicago; and Richard Dean Adkisson of Hillsboro, an employee of Illinois Power Co.
Surviving him with his wife and children are five grandchildren and one great grandchild; a sister, Etta, wife of Burl Watson; two brothers, Charles "Tinner" Adkisson and Walter R. Adkisson and a half-brother G. A. Johnsey, all of Hillsboro. A step-sister and step-brother Mrs. Ida Jones and John Adkisson have died.
Mr. Adkisson was a member of the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years and he was also a member of Hillsboro Presbyterian Church. He was active for many years in the county Republican organization.
Mr. and Mrs. Adkisson observed their golden wedding anniversary on June 17, 1959 and they had an enjoyable day with a family dinner and open house at which scores of their friends called during the afternoon reception.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Bass funeral home in Hillsboro with the Rev. George Cranfill as the officiant. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
