"Robert E. Haines, 80, printer, typesetter -
Robert E. Haines, 80, of 322 E. Second Ave., Lititz, died of natural causes Saturday at Lancaster General Hospital.
He worked as a printer and typesetter for Felser Printing Co., Lancaster. He later worked part time for Wagaman Printing, Lititz.
A veteran of the 79th Division, U.S. Army, he served in the Africa, Italy and European campaigns. He was on the first landing craft to hit the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and was one of the first to arrive on shore and was wounded at San Leur. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He was a member of Lititz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1463 and American Legion Post 56, both of Lititz, and Lititz Moravian Congregation, where he served on council and was active in church affairs.
A 1941 graduate of Lititz High School, he enjoyed golfing and was an avid boater.
Born in Lititz, he was the son of the late Louis [sic] A. and Mabel Weaver Haines.
He was married 55 years to Gladys J. "Honey" Hoover Haines of United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.
Surviving besides his wife is a brother, L. William, married to Gloria Haines of Lancaster."
